2000 Volvo S80 not turbo. I need to replace all 4 sensors. I''m thinking of using universal sensors. How many wires needed for the front and rear? What do you recommend?

Steve,
I brought the car to a Volvo dealer and they're saying 1 front and 1 rear sensor is not working. So they say better yet replace all 4 plus a software update for a grand total of $1700. You're saying only the front need to be replaced? What about the rear, won't it damage the catalytic converters? Car is old with 120,000.
Will a Bosch brand do? Do I need to replace all 4 anyway?

Like i mentioned, in our shop we have had so many problems with aftermarket sensors being out of calibration that we have given up on using any of them. If you want to gamble, Bosch is as good as any aftermarket one; give them a try. There is a possibility though that they may not work properly. I would avoid any kind of universal sensor; "universal" translates to "doesn't quite fit anything exactly". If you ahve to solder on electrical plugs you are creating an unknown amount of electrical resistance in the circuit, which usually affects vehicle operation. Oxygen sensors operate on less than 1 volt, so a 1/10 of a volt drop across an electrical connection makes a world of difference.

Something you may want to consider is seeing if any local salvage yard has the sensors you need available used off of a low mileage wrecked vehicle... that might be one way to save a lot of $$$ if you can find a good one.
